Peace or Righteousness
Jul 28, 2012 - Hayse Reneau
Theodore Roosevelt once said: "If I must choose between peace and righteousness, I choose righteousness." [Nuggets Feb. 1964.] A greater than Roosevelt said: "The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable..." (James 3: 17·) And "Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword." (Matthew 10:34.) Men of little vision such as Sir Neville Chamberlin e, the little man with the umbrella, have timidly chosen peace above righteous ness and purity, and have thus plunged the world into chaos. The big preacher of the big church of Christ (?) of Arkansas is quoted in effect as saying (by a daily newspaper, in reference to an ecumenical conference in which he engaged with a Roman Catholic priest) That any move in the direction of unity is of God. This so-called church of Christ and its big preacher constantly boast of their growth and prosperity. Peace with the world and the devil usually is accompanied by worldly prosperity. Why not? "The world would love his own." (John 15:19.) Let it be noted that walking a wire with a Roman Catholic priest is only one of many examples of compromise and digression characteristic of this big preacher and big church who were once a sound preacher and a sound church. How sad! We think of some Scriptures in this connect ion. "She that live in pleasure is dead while she liveth." (1Tim. 5:6.) "Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou are wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked... " (Rev, 3:17) "Thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. " (Rev, 3:1) (J.W.A.)

It is actually a humorous story. We originally bought the machine from a local company called Denitech rather than online. The reason was the salesman’s desire to “do me a favor” in the hope that if we wanted more expensive equipment in the future, we would contact him. We chose this particular printer because it had a 1 year warranty (rather than 90 days), and because Xerox equipment we used previously proved to be dependable.

Paul illustrates the principle by noting the “trouble” he had suffered in Asia. This seems to be a reference to the mob scene in Ephesus recorded in Acts 19. Paul and his companions were in mortal peril on that occasion, and it seems that Paul left the area in fear (cf. Acts 20:1).

The letter is written to “the church of God which is at Corinth.” This is not a proper name for the church, but rather a phrase designating ownership. The church belongs to God. The church consists of those who have been called out of the world, separated through the shed blood of Jesus Christ. As such, it is proper only to refer to it as belonging to God, or Jesus (cf. Romans 16:16).

I who speak to you am He

At the end of Jesus’ conversation with the Samaritan woman in John 4, the woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming (who is called Christ). When He comes, He will tell us all things.” Jesus’ response was His most direct self-affirmation to date in His early ministry, as He said, “I who speak to you am He.”

“Oh, that you would bear with me in a little folly–and indeed you do bear with me. For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.” (2 Corinthians 11:1-3)

It is because of this faith that Paul prayed for them daily, and desired to come and minister to them, by imparting some spiritual gift (vs. 11). Paul wrote this letter near the end of his third missionary journey while in Corinth. Though he desired to come to Rome, it was a while before his wishes were met (cf. 15:22).
