Peace or Righteousness
By Hayse Reneau on Jul 28, 2012

Peace or Righteousness [February 20, 1964]

Theodore Roosevelt once said: "If I must choose between peace and righteousness, I choose righteousness." [Nuggets Feb. 1964.] A greater than Roosevelt said: "The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable..." (James 3: 17·) And "Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword." (Matthew 10:34.) Men of little vision such as Sir Neville Chamberlin e, the little man with the umbrella, have timidly chosen peace above righteous ness and purity, and have thus plunged the world into chaos. The big preacher of the big church of Christ (?) of Arkansas is quoted in effect as saying (by a daily newspaper, in reference to an ecumenical conference in which he engaged with a Roman Catholic priest) That any move in the direction of unity is of God. This so-called church of Christ and its big preacher constantly boast of their growth and prosperity. Peace with the world and the devil usually is accompanied by worldly prosperity. Why not? "The world would love his own." (John 15:19.) Let it be noted that walking a wire with a Roman Catholic priest is only one of many examples of compromise and digression characteristic of this big preacher and big church who were once a sound preacher and a sound church. How sad! We think of some Scriptures in this connect ion. "She that live in pleasure is dead while she liveth." (1Tim. 5:6.) "Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou are wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked... " (Rev, 3:17) "Thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. " (Rev, 3:1) (J.W.A.)

Don’t think me strange in what follows: When the Lord came to Jerusalem, people wanted to know: Who is this? (Matthew 21:10.) -So don't think me weird, when I only want to know: Who was or is Sir Neville Chamberlain? That's not being strange...

Luke 9:9, And Herod said, John I have beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him. John 12:34, The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?

As I typed the foregoing brother Adams' article, I have no access to the www in my office. I am totally ignorant of the preacher referred to. I never heard of Sir Neville Chamberlain, have you? (And my home state is ARKANSAS. Cotton Plant, to be exact.)  And it seems anyone so flamboyant and colorful as James describes this 'little' preacher [the 'umbrella' thing especially is my mystery] such a preacher would have been a celebrated hero in Colton Plant . (And anyone who was someone always came to Cotton Plant sooner or later( ?) [Some country singer, a...something, CASH, came twice!] Use your computer, and find "Sir Neville." I couldn't. I tried by accessing the archives of The Arkansas Democrat Gazette 1930-1950 but was unsuccessful. The only name similar was an English lord of the 1800s who was a philosopher of something.

ME: this is all a pun (with spiritual implications) on my part; (I know our brother, James W. Adams cites a person he knows, or of whom he knows. (If only He, the unimpeachable source, were present I would let him tell us.)
